Beschreibung

The Mona Monkeys (Cercopithecus mona) are found in southwest Africa. These countries include Nigeria, Ghana, Cameroon, Senegal, Congo, Angola, Gambia, and West Uganda. The species was also introduced to Grenada from West Africa during the slave trading days around the late 1600s. Nobody knows whether it was originally imported as a pet, or a source of wild meat. Whatever the case may be, the Mona Monkey quickly adapted to life in Grenada's forests. In fact, the Mona Monkey flourished until Hurricane Janet swept the island in 1955. Janet destroyed much of the Mona Monkeys habitat, wiping out most of the population in the process. There may only be about 20 troops, with 12-18 members each, left in Grenada.
