Beschreibung


Hirtenmainas sind fast am gesamten Körper dunkelbraun bis schwarz gefärbt. Das Gesicht um die Augen, der Schnabel und die Beine sind gelb gefärbt. Hirtenmainas werden bis 25 cm groß. Bei der Balz verbeugen sich die Männchen tief vor ihrer Partnerin und fächern dabei ihre Schwanzfeder breit auseinander. Dabei ist dann die heller befiederte Unterbauchgegend zu erkennen.
